MAURITANIA: Record hunger predicted in 2008
NOUAKCHOTT, 19 March 2008 (IRIN) - Food security experts predict that Mauritania, where 70 percent of food eaten is imported, may face its highest ever levels of hunger in 2008, and aid agency representatives are concerned they do not have enough money to meet people’s needs amid skyrocketing food prices and dwindling cereals for sale on world markets.

MAURITANIA-SENEGAL: Fears of lack of preparation abate as refugee returns escalate

MAURITANIA: "We are happy to welcome back our brothers and sisters"
MEDINA SALAM, 17 March 2008 (IRIN) - Yacoub Diop is a former police officer and the current chief of Medina Salam, a village on the Senegal River in southern Mauritania, which recently welcomed 41 refugees after 19 years of exile in Senegal. He himself was once a refugee. The moors, who dominate the country, forced him and thousands of black Africans to flee in 1989. Diop spent the next nine years in Senegal, returning home in 1997. He spoke to IRIN about the on-going experience of return.

GLOBAL: OIC and Islamic NGOs pledge support for humanitarian work
DAKAR, 13 March 2008 (IRIN) - More than 60 Islamic non-governmental organisations gathered in Senegal this week met with leaders of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) who agreed that it would play a greater role in providing humanitarian assistance to Islamic countries.
